Rivoli’s Hummingbird

As it preens, a hummer also cleans its bill by wiping it along a branch. This process is accompanied by feather fluffing and a lot of shaking, which expels any trapped dirty water.

Sometimes hummingbirds wait until after a rainstorm to bathe. Immediately after rain stops, a hummer will fly to a large leaf that has a collection of water droplets on its surface. Grasping the leaf edge, the hummer will roll around on the surface of the leaf, mopping up the water. Once it has gathered the water into its feathers, it either moves to another leaf to get more or perches on a branch to start the preening process.
